Leg Pain

Legs are what hold our body up. Any pain or discomfort in the legs leads to difficulty in walking, standing or performing any basic activities. This makes treatment of leg pain really important and urgent.

Signs and symptoms-

pain in the leg can range from dull ache and mild discomfort to an intense stabbing sensation. Other symptoms that may accompany pain include-

  • Redness– may be generalized or localised to a specific area of pain.
  • Swelling– usually seen accompanying redness. May be indicative of underlying systemic conditions or anomalies.
  • Tenderness on percussion– in some cases the pain is dormant and is only felt if that area is touched.
  • Cramps– a sudden sharp sensation on contracting of muscles, cramps are a very common phenomenon. They can also be caused due to sudden excessive activity of muscles that leads to formation of lactic acid.

Leg Pain Causes

leg pain is a fairly common phenomenon and can be a result of a number of reasons-

  • Injury– pain in the legs is very common from physical injuries. They may be easily visible to the eye or may be internal. To examine such internal injuries, the appropriate diagnostic aids are used.
  • Muscle strain– over stretching of muscles can lead to strain and thus discomfort. The most commonly affected muscles include the hamstrings, calves or quadriceps.
  • Tendinitis– the tendons in the hamstrings or near the heel bone are the most common areas that become inflamed and can cause pain.
  • Arthritis– inflammation in the joints can cause redness and even swelling along with pain and difficulty in movement.
  • Varicose veins– due to incompetent heart valves, some times the veins in the legs become knotted and enlarged. This causes severe pain. The patient is unable to stand for long duration or the pain is aggravated.
  • Gout– build up of uric acid in the body can cause pain in the bones and joints.
