Hip Pain

Hip Pain- Physical discomfort in the hip may vary from mild to severe. It is the largest ball and socket joint of the body and is able to withstand a significant amount of wear and tear. It fits together in such a way that it allows its uninterrupted movement. With age and use, the cartilage, muscles and tendons can get damaged and lead to pain and discomfort.

Signs and symptoms-

Depending on the cause of pain in the hip, discomfort can also be felt in side on the hip joint, in the buttocks and even in the thighs.

The pain may also get worse with activity. Sometimes even after taking rest, it does not subside and may even reoccur. Other symptoms include –

  • Feeling of stiffness
  • Swelling
  • Redness
  • Reduced range of motion.

Causes of Hip Pain

some of the conditions that commonly cause hip pain-

  • Arthritis– systemic conditions like osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are some of the most common causes of hip pain. Inflammation in the hip is a result of arthritis, that results in breakdown of cartilage. This pain gets progressively worse if proper treatment is not administered.
  • Fracture– in old age, breaking of the hip bone due to falling or tripping, is a fairly common phenomenon. This leads to severe pain in the hip region and immediate treatment is important.
  • Bursitis– bursae are fluid filled sacs present around bones to help ease friction between them. Their inflammation is called bursitis and is a common cause for joint pain.
  • Strain on the muscles or tendons can be caused due to repeated strenuous activities. Muscles and tendons can get tired and inflamed because of over use, leading to pain.
  • Tendinitis- inflammation of tendons is called tendinitis and can cause severe discomfort.
