  • Injury- injuries to back can occur due to weight lifting, sudden jerky movements, bending and twisting while engaging in sports activities.
  • Arthritis- commonly seen in elderly population, this leads to back pain and restriction in all movements of back with diffuse and dull pain experienced in back.
  • Abnormal curvature of the spine- conditions like scoliosis, kyphosis or lordosis due to obesity frequently cause back pain.
  • Bad posture- jobs involving prolonged sitting in chairs or desk work lead to abnormal position of back and stiffness in muscles in the back leading to pain and discomfort.
  • Osteoporosis- age related weakening of the bones of the spine and consequent fractures are very common causes of back pain in elderly population.

Treatment

At Pain Medics, the cornerstone to diagnosing and treating back pain is a detailed history and clinical examination. A few simple tests further confirm it and some patients may require additional radiological examination such as an X-Ray or an MRI of the lumbar spine. Depending upon the cause established, back pain may respond to physical therapy or pain killers and muscle relaxants followed by strengthening of the back muscles. In case of arthritis involving the vertebrae, this responds to injections given in the joints of the vertebrae and nerves blocks around the same.

Osteoporosis is diagnosed by DEXA scan and treated with medicines which help in bone formation and strengthening. Some patients, who get fractures in spine respond well to procedures like Vertebroplasty and Kyphoplasty.

Problems associated with intervertebral discs leading to leg pain along with back pain need epidural injections to treat nerve related pain.
